Empowering rural women leaders through capacity development, networking, and participation in local governance.
The project aimed to strengthen the capacity of elected women members of Union Parishads in
Bangladesh by improving their knowledge, leadership skills, awareness of rights, and ability to
participate effectively in local government decision-making. The programme was implemented
by Khan Foundation with assistance from GTZ from July 2001 to June 2002.
Building knowledge, confidence, and participation of elected women representatives.
Enhance understanding of Union Parishad structure, roles, and responsibilities.
Develop leadership and decision-making skills among women representatives.
Increase awareness about women’s rights, child rights, and human rights.

To empower elected women members of Union Parishads through training, networking, and monitoring mechanisms so they can effectively perform their responsibilities and participate in political and social development processes.
Women leaders became more aware, skilled, and engaged in local governance.
150 elected women members received four-day in-depth training.
Women members developed their own local action plans.
Twelve Thana Forums were established for elected women representatives.
Women members increased participation in development activities such as road maintenance and village courts.
