Daisy Begum: Resolving Community Conflicts
Daisy Begum's transformation from a quiet homemaker to a respected conflict mediator and Union Parishad member represents the profound impact of KHAN Foundation's democracy program in rural Naogaon.
Before joining the program, Daisy had never spoken at a public gathering. The comprehensive training in democratic governance, conflict resolution, and women's rights gave her not just skills, but confidence. She learned mediation techniques, legal frameworks for local governance, and the importance of inclusive decision-making.
Her village of Baktarpur was plagued by land disputes, family conflicts, and tensions between different communities. Traditional male-dominated arbitration often favored the powerful over the just. Daisy saw an opportunity to bring a different approach – one based on dialogue, fairness, and legal principles.
She established a community mediation center, trained volunteer mediators, and created a transparent process for resolving disputes. Her gentle but firm approach, combined with deep knowledge of local government regulations, earned respect across all sections of society.
In two years, she has successfully mediated over 150 disputes, preventing many from escalating to costly court battles. More significantly, she has empowered women to speak up about injustices and seek fair resolutions. Her mediation center has become a model, with other unions sending representatives to learn from her approach.
Daisy also initiated women's empowerment programs, including literacy classes and vocational training, ensuring that women have the knowledge and skills to participate equally in community decisions.
