Democracy begins where people live, and strong local governance is the cornerstone of a thriving democratic society. KF strengthens local government institutions and elected representatives to ensure communities are served effectively, fairly, and transparently.
By working closely with local leaders, KF enhances their skills, improves coordination among local government institutions, and strengthens service delivery, while promoting women's leadership and encouraging active citizen participation in decision-making.
KHAN Foundation has been working in this area for over three decades by involving all tiers of local government, training Union Parishad Members, Chairmen, Vice-Chairmen, and Women Members across the country. Building on this understanding of local governance, KF has established clear objectives to guide its work.
Objectives
The main objectives of KF's local governance program are to:
Institutionalize participatory and decentralized local government systems.
Build strong democratic structures rooted in good governance.
Raise awareness among elected representatives about their rights and responsibilities.
Reinforce leadership skills and confidence of local leaders to actively participate in decision-making and development initiatives.
Engage communities in governance processes to make democracy tangible and meaningful at the grassroots level.
To achieve these objectives, KF applies a comprehensive work modality that combines training, engagement, and institutional support.
Work Modality
KF empowers local governments through a combination of capacity-building and engagement strategies, including:
Module development, orientations, and in-depth training
Regional and divisional workshops, forum formation, and democracy fairs
Awareness campaigns, debates, cultural programs, and advocacy
Volunteer network formation and activation
Development of educational materials, newsletters, and publications
Stakeholder meetings with service providers, local administration, and constituents
Institutional strengthening of the Municipal Association of Bangladesh (MAB) and the National Institute of Local Government (NILG)
Participation in local, national, and international seminars
